The contaminants, which are associated with the chemical risk or that of ionising radiation, can be found in a gaseous (gas and/or vapours), liquid (high pressure jets and/or sprays) and solid (powder, fibre, fumes, mists) state. Biological contaminants can instead be bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and other microorganisms. Attention must be paid to the level of danger of the substances in the work environment and to evaluate their toxicity and aggressiveness, defining the nature of the danger, whether chemical, biological or physical, as well as assessing the frequency and level of exposure of the operator to the dangerous substances present (concentration in the preparations and in the air), thereby outlining the specific risk related to the task. The above means that the choice of PPE for body chemical protection encloses several aspects to be considered. Therefore, we recommend the preventive consideration of some parameters briefly summarised below.
Primarily, a correct choice begins with the risk assessment, as set forth in the current standards. This is basically implemented by acknowledging the chemicals which the operator could come into contact with. During this stage it is advisable to analyse the chemical-physical characteristics of the substances, which can be noted in the technical data sheets that accompany the SIR articles.
Once the hazardous chemicals in the workplace have been established, it is possible to choose the most suitable protective material. Together with the choice of material, it is necessary to consider what type of garment is needed based on the type of operation to be carried out and the duration of use. Whatever type of garment you choose, bear in mind that its effectiveness always depends on its correct use. It is therefore essential to carefully read the information note before use and train the personnel to dress correctly and use correctly throughout the work period.
